Issues regarding renting from Mike Maynard and We Rent Marion

Warning! This will be a long post regarding renting from Mike Maynard and We Rent Marion!

January 2017

At the beginning of the yearI fell in love with the description of the house we are currently in. I asked lots of sighted people to check out the pictures and make sure that visually nothing was like horribly wrong and got the go ahead to let We Rent Marion know I was interested in the property. An appointment was made to come do a walk through of the house.

While doing a walk through with individuals from We Rent Marion and a sighted person that drove me to Marion a few issues were pointed out that needed to be fixed. For example, missing doors in rooms, nails poking out the the walls, needed fresh paint, broken windows and so on. At that time I was assured that those things would be fixed.

Move in day came which was about 2 weeks later and guess what, those things were not fixed and we discovered even more issues that because it was freezing cold during the walk through they were overlooked. However, they were immediately brought to the landlords attention. For example, a heavy window that when you open it, it falls out, there are little and big holes in the floor that are not safe for not only a blind couple, but definitely not for a little baby, there are vent covers that are hanging off the wall, there’s water damage to the floor in the bathroom that’s weakening the floor, meaning when you step on it, it sinks in and electrical outlets that needed to be checked.

Now in case you are wondering how did these things get missed during the walk through it was because they didn’t have the hit on during the walk through so the house was freezing cold, some of the holes are in areas that you don’t immediately notice, but with having a child that’s crawling around and having to assure their safety, you quickly find them.

Now, at this time around Febuary 2017 they had a maintenance guy also named Mike who was suppose to look into the issues. Well, guess what? For the hole month of Febuary he ignored our calls. We knew he was still around because his children went to the same day care as our son.

March 2017

Nothing has been done about any of the things that needed to be fixed in the house yet. Continued to try and reach Mike the maintenance guy and finally learned he no longer works for We Rent Marion. How nice of them to let their tenants know, right? So, give the landlord a call and find out what’s going on and when would the issues be looked at.

Hey, guess what? That phone call was never returned. We didn’t hear anything for all of March.

April 2017

Finally, we hear from We Rent Marion and they take down the list of things that need to be fixed and claims that someone will be in touch to see what can be done.

The person named Greg does come out, but he only fixes 2 things, the carpet on the stairs and a board in the upstairs livingroom that was coming apart and making the hole in the floor bigger.

Seriously, with that hole big list they only fix 2 things!

Greg tells us that We Rent Marion should be in touch in maybe a week about the rest of the items. So we wait! And we wait! Hey, and we wait some more!

May 2017

I give We Rent Marion a call and leave yet another messages about things in the house that need to be fixed and what is going on. I of course get no answer.

June 2017

I’ve finally had enough and send an email to We Rent Marion and this time I make sure that Mike Maynard gets a copy of my complaints. I list every single thing that needs to be fixed in the house and voice our concerns about the house being nsafe for a newly starting to walk baby that could seriously get hurt. I let them know that now if we don’t hear anything and things don’t start getting fixed that we would be within our rights to find another place to live since they are not taking care of the property as they should and are suppose to. I wrote that email at the end of May and didn’t hear anything for maybe 2 weeks.

Jane, Mike’s assistant calls and says Mike wants to meet with us ASAP so we set a time. But hey, guess what? You probably guessed it, he never showed up and didn’t even bother calling.

Another week goes by and I hear from Jane at We Rent Marion again claiming that someone would be by on a Monday to look at the house. So a time is set and we reschedule our plans to mae ourselves available. But…you guessed it, they don’t show up at the appointed time. But, they do show up hours after the fact, no appology, no nothing. Just, things ran behind. Seriously!

The person that came out was Mike Maynard the actual owner of all the We Rent Marion properties. He noted every single issue that needed to e looked at on his phone and even commented that some things should have been done before the house was rented again.

Like seriously, in my opinion maybe you should check on your properties more often instead of just believing what people tell you and then ignoring when your tenant files complaints.

One of the biggest things we pointed out to Mike Maynard while he was here was that one of the electrical outlets in the kitchen blew out and wasn’t working for a week or so. He goes over to the one that wasn’t working, notices the light is green on the breaker which I assume means it’s all good, plugs in the can opener and of course it works. His comment then was, “well, it works now so all is good there” and doesn’t note that in his file of things to look at.

So the end of June maintenance people come by and we schedule them to come by on a Friday morning to get started.

Ready for the routine?

Friday which is the last Friday of the month and there’s no maintenance worker here. We again get no phone call, no nothing

July 2017

Someone else decides to step in and try and give us assistance in reaching these people and getting through to them that they need to step up and fix their property. They were told that if nothing was done then they would be reported to the health department. Surprise surprise, we get a call from the maintenance guys who claimed it was a miscomunication and that they lost our phone number.

i’m sorry, but if you couldn’t find the number, then why didn’t you call your boss and get it from them? That was a horrible excuse for not doing your job.

So, it is scheduled yet again for them to come on Monday and we change our schedule yet again to accommidate. We should not have to keep doing this!

Oh look, they actually did show up then and stayed the hole day. They did fix a few things, like the nails in the porch, finally putting the doors in 2 of the rooms, putting screens in the windows. Well, some of the windows and cleared up the vegetation that seemed to be taking over the front and back porch. When they were done at the end of the day they told us they would be back the next day, which would have been on a Tuesday, July 11th. Things were finally looking pormising!

Ugh, got our hopes up too high. It’s now Wednesday July 19th and the maintenanc people are no where in sight. We have not received any phone calls attempting to reschedule or apologize for not showing up, nothing.

Remeber that electrical outlet in the kitchen that I said Mike Maynard ignored because it started working again. Well, today is Wednesday July 19, 2017 and we just had the fire department out here because that same outlet heated up and made the prongs of the appliances too hot to touch. The outlet stayed hot for almost a hour after we unplugged everything and turned off the breaker. The fire department told us not to use that outlet again and try and get our landlord out here. Once we told them who our landlord was, their response was not very encouraging.

Hearing, “your landlord isn’t Mike Maynard, is it” is not something you really want to hear from a fire department. It does not make you feel safe about whom you’re renting from. So then we were told to get the health department involved and try and get an inspector out here to check things out.

As a blind couple with a 11 month old son we do not feel safe in this house any longer and it’s way past time to start looking for safer accommidations before something really bad happens due to We Rent Marion and Mike Maynard ignoring our concerns.

Third times the charm, happy birthday baby J

Whew, what a busy time it’s been! Lets update everyone that hasn’t already heard the news and hopefully get the blog caught back up, smiles.

As everyone knows that last week, last Tuesday afternoon I went into the hospital because baby J was trying once again to enter the world early and the results of that lovely visit. If you don’t remember, then, check that out here

Now lets move ahead to early Friday morning about 2AM eastern standard time. I end up in the hospital yet again because J says he wants out now! This time the staff is extremely rude in the fact that they made me feel like what the hell am i doing there, it’s all about the baby and you as the mother really don’t matter. Comments like, “the baby is fine so you’ll be ok.” I tell them I’m the one stressed out due to the pain he’s causing along with the contractions and I get, “oh, just relax and you’ll be fine. The baby is what’s important and he’s looking good. What’s a little discomfort to a healthy baby. You do want him coming out healthy right?” Um, like really. What a way to make the mom depressed and feel like crap, right?

So anyways, around 10:30-11AM our doctor comes in once again and states that “if the contractions were still 5 to 6 minutes apart she’d take little guy out, but since they’re not . . .”

By then I lost it and just cried even more. Once again how I felt and my concerns meant nothing even to my doctor! I was getting ready to call my bf and let him know that I’d be heading home once again to suffer because the doctors and nurses didn’t give a damn, but before that happened, here comes the fun part!

Baby J

No no no no nos, no mores upsetting my mommys and keeping mes in here. I wants out and I wants out rights now!

Five minutes after my doctor left my hospital room she came back in and said, “well the contractions picked back up so I’m going to check you out to see if you’ve dilated.”

The next thing I hear is . . . “oh crap, she has.”

Doctor, How soon can your husband get here?
Me, I don’t know, he’s has to call work and find a ride.
Doctor, um, well, do you think he can get here by 12:30?
Me, um, well, I think so, but he’ll definitely try super hard.

Come to find out that J was not screwing around this time. He meant business and they were taking him out by c-section or he was coming out naturally. He apparently made me dilate a lot, where if she waited any longer it would be taken from her by J, lol.

So needless to say I was then quickly prep for that c-section that wasn’t suppose to happen until August 29. BF/daddy made it there by 1pm and baby J was born at 1:59PM.

He entered the world weighing 7lbs, 8 ounces, 20 inches long, a head full of dark hair and blue eyes and to show his displeasure to the nurses and doctors that upset his mommy and forced him to stay in longer than he wanted…he peed on them! hahahahahahahah

Wow, let me tell you this boy has some powerful ass lungs on him! They pulled him out and within 2 seconds he definitely made his voice heard.

Doctor, now that’s what I like to hear.
Me, I told you had nothing to worry about. He demanded he was ready. Should have listened the first time.

So from this moment forward the pregnancy entries have ended and the fun of baby J has begun! I hope you’re ready for the ride…we’re in for trouble now!

Time Warner ignores blind customers

Here is something I feel that all blind individuals should be aware of if you are either with Time Warner Cable or thinking of switching to them.

Now TWC has an app that is pretty much accessible except for one part and that would be the guide! Since September 23, 2015 this feature has stopped working.

Now my boyfriend and I are both blind and first contacted TWC about this problem then and they said they would look into it. We even provided them with an audio file of what the issue was so they could see it.

Guess what happened?

Absolutely nothing that’s what! It’s now May 9, 2016 and we are still fighting with this same problem. Every update that TWC releases I go in and check to see if maybe they fixed the guide with no luck.

Every time this situation is brought to their attention they want to know what errors come up and what we were doing when the error occurred.

How many times must we try nd explain that it’s not an error that it is a feature that speech does not read any longer.

On a recent call from TWC we were told that their engineer of developing said that voiceover for IPhones hasn’t worked since the IOS 9.0.1 version.

Now you may think this is just an IPhone issue, but as of today since I had to switch to android for a while the TWCTV app guide portion is just like the IPhone. The guide feature does not work at all. I am still waiting to hear from TWC to see what they say about why it doesn’t work on the android, but from my experience with them regarding the IPhone things don’t look good.

Does Time Warner Cable care at all about their blind customers? There are so many of us complaining about this no longer working, but they still refuse to listen or work with blind customers to fix the problem. I could understand not being able to figure it out if the guide feature never worked and them being stumped, but TWC had it working before September 23, 2015 so why not try backtracking to see what is missing in the code or something?

Response from Leader Dog regarding the NFB resolution

***warning***

This post is long!

Recently the NFB National Federation for the Blind passed resolution 2015-05 seen below regarding Leader Dog for the Blind

the NFB is calling on Lions to cease funding of Leader Dogs for the Blind until or
unless it rejects NAC accreditation.
WHEREAS, in 1989 the International Federation of Guide Dog Schools for the Blind, later known as the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), was formed to create and promulgate standards for the operation and administration of guide dog training programs throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, the IGDF today has over eighty member guide dog training programs around the world, including thirteen in the United States; and
WHEREAS, US-member guide dog training programs include Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Seeing Eye, and Leader Dogs for the Blind, the three largest guide dog training programs in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the standards of the IGDF are well known as a solid model for guide dog training program operation and administration; and
WHEREAS, in January 2015 Leader Dogs for the Blind announced that it had received accreditation by the National Accreditation Council for Blind and Low Vision Services (NAC), an organization formed in the 1960s supposedly to create and promulgate standards for the operation of agencies serving the blind but which, in fact, has never provided a good model for the operation and administration of any agency; and
WHEREAS, NAC has no expertise in the guide dog arena, and any attempt by NAC to accredit guide dog training programs can serve only to undermine the efforts of the IGDF; and
WHEREAS, in the past Leader Dogs for the Blind, recognizing the worthless nature of NAC’s alleged accreditation, resisted attempts by NAC to accredit it and stood with consumers in opposing the shoddy and irrelevant standards NAC attempted to use to gain credibility among the ranks of guide dog training programs and their consumers; and
WHEREAS, Leader Dogs’ past vigorous opposition to NAC accreditation was expressed in part through a letter from Harold L. Pocklington, then-executive director of Leader Dogs for the Blind, to NAC’s president, and published in the February 1986 issue of the Braille Monitor, which said: We believe we can handle our own affairs. If the dog guide training programs don’t respond to your suggestions, it may be they don’t believe the method of accreditation can be done only by you. We believe we can be our own judge of operation, without any help from NAC or a committee NAC might appoint. We are not indifferent, unaware, or apathetic. We just believe if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of NAC has always been to undermine and thwart the right of the organized blind to speak on behalf of blind consumers and Leader Dogs’ affiliation with NAC has the same effect in seeking to minimize the voice of the blind; and
WHEREAS, Leader Dogs receives a significant amount of its funding from Lions International and from individual Lions clubs; and
WHEREAS, any money spent by Leader Dogs in seeking and obtaining accreditation by NAC is a misuse of the support provided by its donors and can only encourage the efforts of an outdated and useless agency, NAC, to attempt to gain financial support from other guide dog training programs that it approaches in its attempts to convince them to accept its irrelevant and meaningless accreditation: Now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the National Federation of the Blind in Convention assembled this ninth day of July, 2015, in the city of Orlando, Florida, that this organization condemn and deplore Leader Dogs for the Blind’s accreditation by and consequent support of NAC; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this organization demand that Leader Dogs for the Blind take immediate steps to terminate its accreditation by NAC; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call on Lions International and individual Lions clubs to cease their funding of Leader Dogs for the Blind until it terminates its accreditation by NAC; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this organization urge all guide dog training programs to resist any attempts by NAC to accredit them and insist instead that all guide dog training programs in the United States support the legitimate standards and accreditation of the IGDF.

Now this resolution caused quite a heated debate in many groups that have received service from Leader Dogs for the Blind. Why has the NFB decided to attack LDB? Did the NFB attempt to talk to any of LDB graduates or staff?

Some believed that the person that wrote the resolution was a person that had problems with LDB, but if that’s the case this is not the way to go about fixing it! This further gives the NFB the bad reputation it is known for, attacking when they shouldn’t and makes the good things they have done get overlooked.

Personal note…who the heck told this person that using *whereas* over and over again was correct? You seriously don’t need to say it that many times. It’s more likely someone will stop reading after the second or third time that word was said. I cringed each time my computer read it.

Leader Dog for the Blind sent out this response

You may be aware of a National Federation of the Blind (NFB) resolution that was recently passed against Leader Dogs for the Blind’s accreditation by the National Accreditation Council for Blind and Low Vision Services (NAC). Within the resolution, the NFB demanded that Leader Dog terminate its accreditation by NAC, in part because NAC has no expertise in the guide dog arena. Leader Dog’s NAC accreditation is for our Accelerated Orientation & Mobility Training and our Summer Experience Camp, both of which fall under NAC’s expertise. Our Guide Dog Training has been accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF) since 1999.

We had reached out to the NFB upon learning about its concerns and the NFB did not respond to our communication. We know that this resolution may create questions for you and we’d like to address any and all concerns.

As you know, our goal is to provide consistent, high-quality service to all of our clients. Over the past decade we have made a significant effort to become a transparent organization that is receptive to outside review and input. Accreditation by third-party organizations, such as the IGDF and NAC, provide objectivity and hold us to industry standards when reviewing the services we offer.

Accreditation is a common practice in many industries and is used as a way to assess how quality is maintained. It provides a non-biased evaluation of the work that an organization does and helps establish standards to continuously improve the quality of service provided. We believe these certification processes provide our current and potential clients with relevant information when deciding who they trust to deliver high quality, state-of-the-art travel-related training.

If you have any questions about this matter and need clarification, please contact Rachelle Kniffen, Director of Communications & Marketing at 248-659-5013 or rkniffen@leaderdog.org.

Now, seeing this response it tells me right off that the NFB did not do their homework before making their claims. This shows me that they did not think of the other services that Leader Dog for the Blind offers.

Greenbank Towers Apartments, lets tell you what they won’t

Looking for that new place to call home? If you live in Ottawa Ontario or thinking about moving here, then I advise you to not move to Greenbank Towers because it’s not what it seems.

A nice secured building
Oops, wait that only applies if they remember to close the front doors or lets not mention tell you about major updating to the buzzer system and all hell breaks loose.

Those cameras that they have around the building in case something goes wrong I guess are great if you don’t find yourself actually needing them. If you have someone constantly harassing you in ways you are not comfortable with, do you think they are going to do it where a camera can catch them? No way, so then it becomes your word against theirs. Oh the shame of it all!

Nice friendly staff that care about their tenants. now who wouldn’t love that?
Oh, that last only until you’ve moved in and you need to fix something right away.
They are only nice until you start complaining about other tenants keeping you awake at 3 in the morning by hammering, playing video games or loud music at top volume or there’s a poor dog barking constantly for hours and hours and for weeks and weeks.
That only last until they make a mistake and you try and call them on it. Take a look at this post right over here and learn about that.
See the staff at Greenbank Towers Apartments aren’t allowed to be nice to the tenants in the building or they get called into the office and told to cut that out.

Oh look the building is so clean and well taken care of. That’s awesome isn’t it?
Well, we thought so too until it was time to move into a place and the apartment looked like the worlds biggest trash dump on the day we moved in. Better have your own cleaning crew handy. The elevators always smell like, well, I don’t want to go there. i just advise getting nose plugs or something if you insist on staying.

Speaking of the elevators lets talk about those for a moment ok?
I really hope you aren’t afraid of getting stuck in closed areas because those things do get stuck and way too often. It does no good to report it because they won’t do anything about it either since they claim they are “new” elevators. Be safe take the stairs if you must, but I wouldn’t want to always climb up and down them if I stay on the 18th floor, *whew* Oh yes there are 3 of them, but you would never know it. Damn things are slower than a turtle and when the stupid fire alarm goes off, ha, could take you forever to get back to your floor.

Now onto that lovely fire alarm
I hope you don’t like sleep or have kids. if so you can kiss sleep good bye a great deal of the time. Those alarms go off at all hours, 10 pm, midnight, 3 AM, you name it and it’s always a false alarm. For reasons like the sprinkler system in the basement set it off or the fire alarm panel went wonky or hell, just because it felt like messing up your sleep when it’s freezing cold outside. Even the fire fighters just shake their heads whenever they have to show up these days.

Staying on the topic of fires and your safety or your kids or animals. Hell even for your apartment that you’re paying all that money for. If they tell you that throwing lit smokes off the patio will get the person in some kind of trouble. sorry, they lie. All they will say is oh well and shrug and do nothing.
See one day we found out that the person above us was doing just that and they actually burned a hole in a piece of our furniture. What would have happened if a fire would have started out their on the patio? What if one of us would have been seriously hurt? Do you think the staff at Greenbank Towers cared? Of course not!

Is this the place you really want to put money into? Where you and your families safety could be at risk? No no no, please don’t move here. Find somewhere safer and where the staff care about their tenants and making things right if something goes wrong. Put your life and those of your pets and loved family members in the hands of anyone but Greenbank Towers who is managed by Paramount Properties.

Take my word for it. i lived in Greenbank Towers and have seen the real deal. Greenbank Towers may look nice and you may love all the pretty words they tell you, but that only last until you are a tenant!

Phone call more important than passenger safety?

Some Blueline taxi drivers need to go back to class on passenger safety if there is such a thing. Especially when driving passengers with some form of disability.

Early this morning I had a huge craving for nachoes and cheese sticks and just had to go to Denny’s So off James and I went.

We went through our usual song and dance, waiting downstairs, blind passenger, let driver know blah blah. All went well with that part, driver was a good boy.

Sadly though when we got to Denny’s he either received or decided to make a phone call. This very important phone call made him lose his mind and forget about his blind passengers safety, because guess where he dropped us off?

*looks around confused*

In the middle of the parking lot of Denny’s and drove off! Didn’t ask if we needed help or anything. He just went on with his conversation, very loud too I must say, took our payment and poof, off he went.

Luckily for us a waitress was watching and came outside to help us. Yes, we would have eventually found the sidewalk, but that was completely stupid on the drivers part.

This Blueline Taxi driver this morning made their company look very very bad.

Where was that effective and professional service?

Algonquin’s CSD department falls flat

They didn’t like it when I kept getting after them for what they were screwing up as far as my supplies needed for my program, so here’s one even better.

Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD) at Algonquin College is suppose to be there to help students that have a disability be successful in school, right? Well, how is it that they can’t even get one, count it one course prepared for a student in a timely matter?

In September James made CSD aware that he would be going through academic upgrading for math and wanted to know how much time they would need for getting things adapted for him so that he could start. Well, they first told him that he’d have to do the test first to see where he’d place and they could go from there. Great, super, not a problem. Lets get the ball rolling.

Ok, so test was taken and got all the information that was needed and James was suppose to start in October, but um wait, what happened? Who dropped the ball?

Hey CSD where did you go? It’s now December did they forget about that math course and James? Why not go over to the geeks house and see if he has something to say about this issue. Although he’s lazy and probably doesn’t, ha!

Greenbank Towers tries to screw blind tenant

This will be a pretty long post. You have been warned.

Greenbank Towers currently managed by Paramount Property made a huge mistake in September and tried to make it out that they weren’t at fault and that I was.

Starting in June of this year Greenbank Towers started taking their rent of $859 directly from my bank account. This was great for me since it meant there was one less thing I had to concern myself about. For the months of June, July and August things ran smoothly, but along came September. All of a sudden Greenbank Towers forgot about rent. After a week went by I checked in with the property manager for these apartments and was told to just hang tight due to the holiday and rent would come out. Another week went by and rent was still sitting in my bank account so I checked again with the rental office. Once again I was told just to wait and rent would come out. I offered to pay went directly with my bank card, but it was refused. Again time went by and rent was still sitting in my account. I checked in once more and guess what I got?

Yep, I got the same. Rent will come out just wait. I once again stated I would pay rent directly with my bank account and the rental office refused. I finally had enough of this and gave up asking.

The end of September came around and my rent was still sitting in my bank account of $859 so I put that money towards my tuition for school. I had no idea what Greenbank Towers and Paramount Property was doing and I was past tired of getting the run around with it.

Now here’s where Greenbank Towers tries to screw their blind tenet over their mistake.

October rolled around about a week after Thanksgiving and I get a phone call asking about when I planned on paying rent from September of $859? Seriously! They were now going to come and ask me about rent? So I went over with them what things took place during that month and the part everyone played.

Of course they didn’t want to hear that they messed up. They claimed that they tried to take rent, but it wasn’t going through. Um hello, huge lie. If there was a bank problem why not say so right away? Why wait a whole month later? But that’s ok it was a lie anyway. Greenbank Towers did not even attempt to take rent since RC showed no record of this. How is it you all of a sudden are having trouble taking rent from this account when it worked fine the months before?

Greenbank Towers along with Paramount Property wanted to argue with me over this and then state that I knew rent needed to be paid and that I should have made other arrangements to do so. WTF, did people forget that I did just that and it was refused? What were they smoking?

Well, then it came down to the when can you put some money toward this balance? I explained to them that since I’m on low income it would be a while but it would get paid. I had no problem paying them the $859. I knew they should have their money, but I also wasn’t going to break my back trying to do so since I did all I could back in September. Greenbank and Paramount wanted half of the rent and wanted it right away despite me telling them it was not possible. I explained to them that since Septembers rent went towards school I would then use the income for school to cover rent whenever I got that payment. I sadly couldn’t give a date because I had no control over that. But guess what? Greenbank and Paramount wanted not to hear that and they kept pushing. So I took another step because I felt I was entering a bad situation and needed some help.

I called a lawyer and got advice on what to do. I explained the whole situation with time line and all and stated my concerns. I was told by the lawyer that I did everything in my power to get things resolved before and Greenbank and Paramount were now in the wrong for pushing. I was advised to write everything down and mail everyone involved and state when I’d make the payment and leave it at that. I was also told that if things got worse, meaning an eviction notice to involve the lawyer further.

Well, things rent wise are now resolved and I didn’t have to call the lawyer for this matter, but Greenbank Towers and Paramount Property has lost my respect and made it so I no longer feel comfortable living in this building or any that is run by them.

Of course there’s another reason I’m not comfortable here as well, but I won’t get into that. I believe this is bad enough for now.
