Store clerk lies about winning lottery ticket

Welcome to Ethics with Captain John and Quacksal Rose. *laughs*

I wasn’t sure that I’d actually like this class or that it would hold my attention, but ha, John, my instructor and the group of students in the class changed my mind about that. With his energy and the classes energy, it should be interesting after all. From my classmates I hear that he’s a great instructor, but can also be a tough grader. *sighs* those tough graders can be worrisome.

Now on the other hand, John says that Ethics will be easy to pass as long as we show up, do the readings and pay attention to what he says read to prepare for test. Hmm, I don’t know though, all instructors tell you that at some point, *chuckles*

Who is Quacksal Rose? Oh, *chuckles* he is the toy duck that John uses to get everyone’s attention after a group discussion so that he doesn’t have to yell to get our attention.

So, you’re probably wondering about the title of this post and where it comes from. Here is the Ethical question from last week.

What would you do in the situations below?

A customer comes in to check to see if she has the winning lottery ticket, the machine says she does, but the store clerk says she didn’t. It was only for a few dollars. Other customers in the store that saw what happened said nothing, just shook their head and walk out of the store.

The same store, same clerk and another customer. This time the winning ticket is for over 200 dollars and the clerk tells the customer that she didn’t win. This time some customers speak up and confront the clerk.

Would you speak up if you saw this happen or does it make a difference on how much the winning ticket was on what you would do?

  1. I think that would depend on how I’d handle it if it were my ticket. If it was for, say, $5, I’d probably just suck it up and walk out. It’s not worth arguing over the price of a free ticket, if I’m being honest. A couple hundred dollars, though? That’s a creditcard payment. Damn right I’ll argue it.
